Adnyadharak Aruni
21. There was a sage named Ayodadhaumya. He had three disciples named Upamanyu, Aruni and Ved.
22. One day he sent Aruni, a citizen of Panchal region, to go and bind the fields with a wall.
23. After listening to his Gurus orders, Panchalya Aruni went there, but could not bind the fields. He faced difficulties. At last he found a solution. “So that is what I should do”, he said to himself.
24. He entered directly in the field, and lied in there, due to which the water stopped flowing in the field.
25. After some time Ayodadhaumya guruji asked his disciples, “Oh! Where did Aruni Panchalya go?”
26. They said, “Guruji, you are the one, who sent him to bind the fields.” Hearing this, he said to the disciples, “Then let us all head to where Aruni has gone.”
27. Guruji headed there and started calling Aruni, “Hey Aruni! Where are you? Come here, child!”
28. Hearing his Guru’s word, Aruni immediately rose up from the fields and stood in front of Guruji with folded hands.
29. And he said to Guruji, “I am here in the fields. The water could not be stopped from flowing in the fields so I entered in the fields. After hearing you calling me, I broke the binding wall created by my lying down, and stood in front of you.”
30. “Thus, I bow down to you. Instruct me, on what I should follow?”
31. Guruji answered, “You broke the binding wall and stood up, and thus will be known as ‘Uddalak’ in the future.” Saying that Guruji blessed him.
32. He said, “You have followed my (Guru’s) orders so you will be very learned, you will learn all the Vedas and Dharmashastras”
33. Having heard the blessings, Aruni went to his destined country!

६४. बुद्धी, सामर्थ्य आणि उत्साह यांच्या बळावर सर्व अस्त्र विद्येत निष्णात असणारा अर्जुन, अस्त्रांच्या प्रयोगात आणि गुरूवरील प्रेमाच्या बाबतीत सर्वांपेक्षा वेगळा होता.
६५. अस्त्रविद्या सर्वांना सारखीच शिकवली होती, पण कौशल्यामुळे पराक्रमी ठरलेला एकटा अर्जुनच सर्व राजकुमारांमध्ये अतिरथी ठरला.
६६. ताकदीमध्ये वरचढ असलेला भीमसेन आणि विद्यावान अर्जुन या दोघांचाही दुष्ट कौरव द्वेष करीत असत.
६७. सर्व विद्या आणि सर्व अस्त्रे शिक्षण दिलेल्या त्या सर्वांना श्रेष्ठ गुरू द्रोणाचार्य यांनी एका ठिकाणी गोळा केले. बाणाने वेध घेण्याचे त्यांचे कौशल्य द्रोणांना बघायचे होते.
६८. एका झाडाच्या शेंड्यावर कारागिरांनी केलेला एक कृत्रिम पक्षी त्या कुमारांच्या नकळत ठेवला आणि तोच बाणाचे लक्ष्य आहे असे सांगितले.
६९. तुम्ही सर्वांनी आपापली धनुष्ये घेऊन त्यांवर बाण सज्ज करून या कृत्रिम पक्ष्यासमोर सर्वांनी उभे रहा.
७०. मी सांगितल्याबरोबरच त्याचे मस्तक तुम्ही बाणाने उडवावे. मी एकेकाला सांगीन, बाळांनो! तसेच तुम्ही करा.
७१. नंतर अंगिरस कुळातले ते श्रेष्ठ ऋषी प्रथम युधिष्ठिराला म्हणाले, एक महावेगवान बाण धनुष्यावर चढव आणि माझे बोलणे संपल्यावर तो सोड.
७२. मग गुरूनं सांगितले त्यानुसार प्रथम आपले धनुष्य घेऊन तो शत्रूंना धडकी भरवणारा युधिष्ठिर, त्या कृत्रिम पक्षाच्या समोर उभा राहिला! हे भरतकुलश्रेष्ठा परीक्षिता!
७३. मग धनुष्य सज्ज करून बसलेल्या त्या कुरुकुळातील पुत्राला ते द्रोण लगेचच असे म्हणाले,
७४. "हे राजपुत्र! झाडाच्या शेंड्यावर बसलेला तो कृत्रिम पक्षी पहा." युधिष्ठिर म्हणाला "आचार्य दिसतोय मला."
७५. लगेचच द्रोण पुन्हा त्याला म्हणाले, "मग तुला हे झाड, मी, तुझे भाऊ, हे दिसत आहेत का?"
७६. तो कुंतीपुत्र त्यांना म्हणाला, "हे प्रचंड मोठं झाड मला दिसत आहे. तुम्ही दिसत आहात. तसेच भाऊ व पक्षी यांना मी परत परत पहात आहे.
७७. द्रोण मनातून नाराज झाले व त्याची अवहेलना करीत त्याला म्हणाले, “दूर हो! पक्ष्याचा वेध घेणं तुला जमणार नाही.”
७८. मग त्या थोर कीर्तिमान द्रोणांनी जाणण्याच्या इच्छेने त्याच प्रकारे दुर्योधन इ. धृतराष्ट्र पुत्रांना भीम वगैरे अन्य शिष्यांना, इतर देशातल्या राजांना विचारले. तसेच सर्व दिसत आहे, असे म्हटल्यावर त्यांची निंदा झाली.
येथे महाभारतातील आदीपर्वातल्या संभव पर्वातील द्रोण शिष्य परीक्षेचा एकशेएकतिसावा अध्याय संपला.
१. मग स्मितहास्य करीत द्रोण धनंजयाला म्हणाले, “पहा तुला आता या लक्षाचा वेध घ्यायचा आहे.
२. मी सांगितल्याबरोबर तुला बाण सोडायचा आहे. बाळ! धनुष्य सज्ज करून क्षणभर थांब.”
३. असे म्हटल्यावर गुरूंच्या या बोलण्याने प्रेरित झालेला सव्यसाची अर्जुन, धनुष्य वाकवून कृत्रिम पक्ष्याच्या समोर उभा राहिला.
४. त्या क्षणीच द्रोण त्याच प्रकारे त्याला म्हणाले, “हे झाड, त्यावरील तो कृत्रिम पक्षी, मी सुद्धा, तुला दिसतोय ना रे अर्जुन!
५. हे भरतकुलपुत्र परीक्षिता! अर्जुन द्रोणाचार्यांना म्हणाला, “मला फक्त तो पक्षी तेवढा दिसत आहे. वृक्ष, तुम्ही, काही मला दिसत नाही.”
६. तेव्हा आनंदीत झालेले दुर्दम्य द्रोण, महारथी पांडवास पुन्हा एकदा म्हणाले,
७. “जर हा पक्षी तुला दिसत असेल, तर मला परत एकदा सांग.” तो म्हणाला, “त्या पक्षाचे शरीर दिसत नाही, तर त्याचे केवळ मस्तक दिसत आहे.”
८. अर्जुनाने असे म्हटल्यावर द्रोण आनंदाने रोमांचित झाले आणि अर्जुनाला म्हणाले, “बाण सोड.” अर्जुनानेही अन्य कोणताही विचार न करता बाण सोडला.
९. मग धारदार बाणाने पंडूपुत्र अर्जुनाने झाडावर ठेवलेल्या पक्ष्याचे शिर तत्काळ खाली पाडले.
१०. ते काम पूर्ण झाल्यावर द्रोणांनी त्या पंडुपुत्रास आलिंगन दिले व त्यांना वाटलं की सगळ्या लवाजम्यासकट द्रुपदाचा आता युद्धात पराभव झालाच!!

64. Arjun, stood out from others, with respect to his excellence and in weaponry and his love for his Guru, on the basis of his intellect, strength and enthusiasm.
65. The education of weaponry was imparted equally to all the students. But owing to his skills, only Arjun became the best among all the princes.
66. The cunning Kauravas, always resented powerful Bhimsen and learned Arjun.
67. Having imparted all the knowledge of subjects and weapons, the great Guru Dronacharya, gathered all his students at a place. He wanted to test them for their archery skills.
68. He planted a fake bird made by an artisan, on a tree without the knowledge of the teens and told them that the bird is their aim.
69. “Now, all of you raise your bows, attach the arrows to it, and stand in front of this artificial bird,
70. Behead the bird with your bow, once I have told you to do so. Children, I will ask one by one, and you do accordingly.
71. Then, the great sage from Angiras family, Dronacharya told Yudhishthir, “Load a super fast arrow on your bow, and release the arrow, after I finish my instruction.
72. Following his Guru’s instructions, the one whom the enemy fears, Yudhisthir, stood first in front of the artificial bird, with his bow and arrow.
73. “Hey Parikshit! Guru Dronacharya immediately asked the descendant of the Kurukul,
74. “Hey Prince! Look at the artificial bird sitting atop the tree.” Yudhishthir said, “Acharya, I can see it.”
75. Then Dronacharya again asked, “Then can you see this tree, me, your brothers?”
76. The Son of Kunti, Yudhishthir answered,”I can see this huge tree, you, my brothers and the bird again and again”
77. Dronacharya was disappointed at heart and said to Yudhishthir disrespectfully, “You move away! You won’t be able to aim at the target.”
78. Then the famous Dronacharya, curious to know what others think, asked sons of Dhritarashtra, like Duryodhan, other students like Bhim and kings of other countries, the same questions.
79. When even they answered that they saw everything, they got loathed.
Here the 131st chapter of Sambhavaparva, from Adiparva of Mahabharata ends.
1. Then, Dronacharya asked Dhananjay, smiling, “Look! You have to aim for the target now!”
2. You have to release the arrow, once I tell you to do so. Child! Prepare the bow and arrow and wait for a moment.”
3. Inspired by his Guru’s word, Savyasachi Arjun, stretched his bow and stood in front of the artificial bird.
4. At the same moment, Guru Dronacharya asked him the same way, “Arjun! Can you see this tree, the artificial bird sitting on it, me too?”
5. “Hey Bharatkulputra Parikshit! Arjun told Dronacharya, “I can only see the bird. I cannot see you.”
6. Dronacharya felt happy and further asked Arjun, “If you say you see the bird, then tell me again.”
7. Arjun said, “I cannot see the body of the bird, I can only see his head.”
8. Dronacharya was thrilled with happiness, told Arjun, “Shoot the target.” Without thinking further, Arjun shot the arrow.
9. Then son of Pandu, Arjun, beheaded the bird on the tree with the sharp arrow.
10. After the task was complete, Dronacharya hugged Arjun, and felt reassured that Drupad can be now defeated with his lot.
